stop parsing at the closing "}".

* "git rev-parse --symbolic-full-name ^master^2" printed solitary "^",
|

but it should print nothing.

* "git commit" did not detect when it failed to write tree objects.

* "git fetch" sometimes transferred too many objects unnecessarily.
